Pineal Architecture

Pineal...

Where does the name 'pineal' come from?
Some associations..

The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It is shaped like a tiny pine cone, is about 50mm long, reddish-gray and is located near the center of the brain. The pineal gland produces melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and photoperiodic (seasonal) functions.

The pineal gland is also called the "third-eye" as its functions closely resemble that of an actual eye. It is considered to be the shrivelled remnant of an ancient warmth and light-perceiving sense organ that opened to the exterior with the fontanelle in the cranial bone.

Directly affected by the light taken in through the eyes, the pineal gland regulates the biological rhythms of the body like day-night cycle, menstrual cycles, mating seasons, hibernation, seasonal flight patterns and many other "instinctual" behaviors.

The pineal gland interacts closely with the sympathetic nervous system that is responsible for functions like an increased heartbeat frequency.

According to René Descartes, the pineal gland transmitted messages from the eyes to the muscles mechanically (see illustration). Light rays coming from an object enter the lenses of the eyes, then proceed via the retinas to the pineal gland. Impulses of this gland activate the muscles of the arm, which generate the pointing posture.

He also thought that the pineal gland linked humans to the one non-material part of the universe, the mind. He thought that the mind existed outside the body and was independent of it, although mind and body could interact through the medium of the pineal gland. He supposed the pineal gland to be the place where the human soul is located.

Hindoo Mystics see the 'Brow Chakra' situated in the pineal gland.
Chakras are the vital energy centres in our body. The seven major chakra centers are; crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, hara, and root.

The
sixth chakra, the brow center also referred to, is located in the center of the forehead.  It is associated with the forehead, temples, the pituitary and the pineal gland.
This chakra is related the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively.
This centre governs our ability to see life accurately. It is the centre of our personal vision and encompasses our ability to analyze, think, reason, understand, remember, and discern.  As the "third eye", this is also our centre for clairvoyance, insight, imagination and dreaming.
